Lauren Lanza McKay - U2 Sunday Bloody Sunday - (WAR)
THE SONG: “Sunday Bloody Sunday".
“Sunday Bloody Sunday". Is the opening track from U2's 1983 album, called War.
On January 30, 1972, British troops opened fire on unarmed and peaceful civilians in Derry, Ireland during a march for the civil rights.
"Sunday Bloody Sunday" is noted for its militaristic drumbeat, harsh guitar, and melodic harmonies. One of U2's most overtly political songs, its lyrics describe the horror felt by an observer of The Troubles in Northern Ireland, mainly focusing on the Bloody Sunday incident in Derry where British troops shot and killed during the civil rights march.
Drummer Mullen said of the song in 1983:
"We're into the politics of people, we're not into politics. Like you talk about Northern Ireland, 'Sunday Bloody Sunday,' people sort of think, 'Oh, that time when 13 Catholics were shot by British soldiers'; that's not what the song is about. That's an incident, the most famous incident in Northern Ireland and it's the strongest way of saying, 'How long? How long do we have to put up with this?' I don't care who's who - Catholics, Protestants, whatever. You know people are dying every single day through bitterness and hate, and we're saying why? What's the point? And you can move that into places like El Salvador and other similar situations - people dying. Let's forget the politics, let's stop shooting each other and sit around the table and talk about it... There are a lot of bands taking sides saying politics is crap, etc. Well, so what! The real battle is people dying, that's the real battle.”
THE GROUP, U2.
U2 are a rock band that formed in Dublin, Ireland. The band consists of Bono (vocals and rhythm guitar), The Edge (guitar, keyboards, and vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums and percussion).
The band formed in Dublin on 25th September 1976. Larry Mullen, Jr., then 14 years old, posted a notice on his secondary school (Mount Temple Comprehensive School) notice board in search of musicians for a new band.
Steve Averill, a punk rock musician and family friend of Clayton's, had suggested six potential names from which the band chose "U2" for its ambiguity and open-ended interpretations, and because it was the name that they disliked the least.

WHY DID I CHOOSE THIS SONG:
First of all I love this song because of its rhythm, the percussion with this kind of military march and its guitars, and then it’s the lyric of it. U2 always tend to sing songs with really special meanings to them.
In this song, “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, the lyric is very emotional, and it makes you think twice about Religion. How the fights against Religions are causing wars and hatred between people, and how it has being going on for so many years. And then the result of it is always the same, the death of innocent people. Wars over Religion are too costly!
