Bart Peeters and his band
Bart Peeters is a Belgian musician. His music is not the ‘traditional’ Belgian music, you have to love it. His music sounds very warm and energetic. When you go to a concert of him during his theater tour, you always come home with a happy feeling. Bart Peeters is not the best singer ever (his sound is often quite rough and not always on tone), but for me he is the greatest. Bart (who takes the voice and guitar for his account) plays with other, very talented musicians:
- Mike Smeulders: piano and accordion
- Ivan Smeulders: bass guitar and percussion (different kinds of percussion)
- Piet van den Heuvel: percussion, voice and guitar
- Abdellah Marrakchi: percussion (he is my favorit of the group, because he is so talented and he goes up in his music so much. Only looking at him playing makes you happy)
- Emile Verstraeten: violins and mandolin
You can classify their music under World music and Jazz. Some songs are very jazzy, others very world or cabaret. Because the musicians are so talented, they can make a rainbow of different sounds in their songs. You can compare it a bit with street musicians; they have a very typical and nevertheless so varied sound.
Sometimes, they also make covers, for example ‘Cannonball’ by Damien Rice.
The song: Messias - Messiah
Because Bart Peeters’ songs are all in Flemish, firstly here the lyrics and the translation
Ik ben op zoek naar een messias
Man of vrouw heeft geen belang
Die mijn ziel wat heil kan geven
Want dat zoekt mijn ziel al lang
Ik ben op zoek naar een verlosser
Zo eentje die er zin in heeft
Hij hoeft niet voor mij te sterven
Als hij mijn zonden maar vergeeft
Wil er iemand mijn
Wil er iemand mijn
Wil er iemand mijn messias zijn
Wil er iemand mijn messias zijn
Wil er iemand mijn messias zijn
Ik ben op zoek naar een messias
Die nog door niemand werd misbruikt
Geen roetsjbaan naar atoomconflicten
Geen heiland die naar olie ruikt
Een waar geen enkele president
Ooit op gezworen heeft
Een messias die nog fris zit
Een waar geen bloed aan kleeft
Wil er iemand...
Ik zoek een profeet
Op hoge hakken of besnord
Ik zoek een god vol van genade
Zo een die meelacht
Als er gelachen wordt
Wiens kerken niet in glamour baden
Wil er iemand mijn
I am looking for a Messiah
Man or woman, doesn’t matter
Who can give my soul salvation
‘Cause that’s what my soul is searching already for a long time
I’m looking for a savior
That kind who really feels like
He doesn’t have to die for me
If he only forgives my sins
Does somebody want to be my
Does somebody want to be my
Does somebody want to be my Messiah
Does somebody want to be my Messiah
Does somebody want to be my Messiah
I’m looking for a Messiah
Who wasn’t abused by anyone
No roller coaster to nuclear conflicts
No Savior that smells like oil
One were no single president
Ever has vowed on
A Messiah who is still fresh
One where no blood sticks on
Chorus
I am looking for a prophet
With high heels or a mustache
I am looking for a God full of mercy
That kind that laughs along
If there is laughter
Whose churches do not bathe in glamour
Chorus
Comments on the song
I chose this song for two reasons. One of them is the great lyrics. With this song he wants to claim that everyone in this world is looking for a savior, but often see a savior in the wrong person. I think he also wants to offend the Church, because many people do things in the name of God, but these things are often not what God wanted from us. As well, churches are very rich while they are supposed to be humble. He just wants to say that you can find a Messiah in everyone of us, in a very common person and not in a big building or in leaders who promise you savior.
Secondly I chose the song because I think the composition is great. When you listen to it often, you can find a lot of music lines of the different instruments. There are a lot of different instruments, and together they sound heavenly and harmonious to me. I like the harmony in the more voice system. It has a very worldly sound right from the beginning, with the udu and the backing vocals in the beginning.
The instruments who are in this song are:
vocals, guitar, castanets, percussion, mandolin, violin, accordion, bass guitar, harmonium, keyboards, piano and a shaker
There are as well some more unknown instruments, which make the sound of this song so worldly:
You can watch Bart and his band perform the song in this videoclip, so you can feel the positive vibes of this group yourself:
If you want to hear or see more of him, I can recommend you this songs:
- Poolijs
- Heist aan Zee
- Ik wil je
- Andersomdag
- Liefde is alles
- Groot zijn in iets kleins
